There's another new update in the case of a billionaire couple found dead in their North York home.
The family of Barry and Honey Sherman is launching an investigation of its own into the deaths.
Lawyer Brian Greenspan has confirmed to the Toronto Star that he is offering informal help in the independent probe.
Sources have indicated the working theory is murder-suicide.
The Sherman family doesn't accept that.
David Perry is a former homicide detective with Toronto Police and now runs his own private investigation firm. He highly doubts it's a case of double murder. "From what the police are telling us, they're not looking for any suspects and there's no forced entry. That doesn't mean you completely eliminate it but it certainly raises the issue that it's unlikely it's a double murder."
That leaves murder-suicide or double suicide. "Double suicides are not common, especially if it involves the mechanism of ligature strangulation. I would say I don't recall one like that. It doesn't mean that it couldn't happen and it doesn't mean you can rule it out," Perry says.
The independent probe doesn't necessarily mean the family will end up with a different conclusion than investigators but the PI could help make sense of it.
Meanwhile, thousands of people will gather at the International Centre in Mississauga for a memorial service beginning at 11 a.m.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Premier Kathleen Wynne and Mayor John Tory will all be in attendance.
