It was a deadly year on provincial highways.
"In 2017 we had 341 people lose their lives in road collisions across the province. 341 people dead which is up over 11 per cent from 2016; We had 307 fatalities in 2016," says OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.
The four leading causes are inattentive driving, aggressive driving, impaired driving, and seat belts.
"The number on killer is inattentive-related fatalities. 83 people died because of distracted or inattentive-related collisions. That's not just holding a cell phone but it can be all sorts of activities," Schmidt describes. "73 people died in aggressive driving or speeding-related fatalities; 44 people died in alcohol or drug-related collisions; 47 people died because they were not wearing their seat belts.
Inattentive-related fatalities were up 29.7 per cent and speed-related fatalities were up around 35 per cent.
