A father and son suffered burns to their legs and feet in a fire that destroyed their mansion in Vaughan.
Vaughan Fire says the fire on Ava Pl near Nashville Rd and Hwy 27 started at about 5:30 a.m Wednesday.
The call for help didn't come from inside the home or even from a neighbour. The woman who owned the home drove about five minutes to a de-commissioned volunteer fire station and used an emergency phone with a direct line to the fire department.
"Apparently there was no access to a telephone at this location," Fire Chief Larry Bentley told NEWSTALK 1010 from the scene. Bentley could not say if the woman knew the fire hall was out of service.
Firefighters pulled up to the sprawling 8,000 square foot home to find flames licking out of the back of the building and eating into the roof.
The father and son, believed to be 12-years-old, were taken to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto for treatment. It is not clear if the woman suffered any injuries.
The luxury is considered to be a total loss. The Ontario Fire Marshal's will probe the blaze because of value of property lost.
Bentley says it's too soon to tell how the fire started.
