Toronto City Council is in favour of banning the sale of handguns and handgun ammunition.
Councillor Joe Cressy's motion to urge the federal government to ban the sale of handguns in Toronto and the province to ban the sale of handgun ammunition in the city passed 41-4.
Mayor John Tory voted in favour. "We've also taken some steps that can be handled in the more immediate term to really get tough on gun trafficking which is going on in Toronto and elsewhere in the country. Also, to make more stringent the provisions when someone goes to get a gun who has suffered from mental illness or who has been involved in domestic violence and to provide resources to crack down on gun trafficking."
Councillors Giorgio Mammoliti, Michael Ford, Jon Burnside, and Stephen Holyday voted against the motion.
Mammoliti's motion that 100 police officers be hired immediately passed 24-21. The motion states the city's reserve fund be used to pay for the hiring spree.
Councillor Josh Matlow's motion to ask the province to fulfill its promise to provide just under $2 billion for mental health supports also passed by a vote of 44-1.
