The regional chair for Durham isn't discouraging anyone from visiting the area this weekend — but he's urging caution.
"It's exciting that working together as a region we've been able to get our numbers down... and part of that now is entering into (Stage 2)," John Henry tells NEWSTALK1010.
Cities like Oshawa, Ajax, Whitby and Pickering have all been given the green light to open even more businesses starting this Friday. That includes splash pads, hair salons and restaurants.
But with Toronto still in Stage 1, it's likely some will make the trip out of the city on the weekend.
"People will move around the region — they'll move up to cottage communities, but we need to be mindful and respect that it's a challenge that we all have to face together, and there's simple things that we can do and together we'll win, but if we don't follow the practices that are in place this will come back," Henry says. "If you do come to the region, please remember there are rules — social distancing, wash your hands, wear a face mask."
Henry is also asking anyone visiting the area to be patient as there are sure to be lineups at local businesses.
He also pointed out that the region's daily COVID-19 case numbers are quite low, and they don't want to see a second wave.
