A letter signed by five former Attorneys General calls on RCMP to 'fully and fairly investigate' accusations of political interference in the controversy over SNC-Lavalin.
The document ends up on the desk of police officials after Jody Wilson-Raybould told a Justice Committee that she faced 'relentless' pressure from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, members of his staff, and other top Liberals to let the giant construction firm off easy on charges of bribery and corruption.
SNC-Lavalin had run into trouble over its business dealings in Libya and the accusation from Wilson-Raybould is that Trudeau was worried about the political ramifications, should the company pull out of Canada.
The letter, which is signed by former Justice Ministers Peter McKay and Douglas Grinslade Lewis- Minister of Justice of Canada, along with other provincial Attorney Generals, says the truth in the SNC-Lavalin matter, 'strikes at the core of the rule of law and independence of our justice system.'
"In our shared view," it says, "ordinary Canadians, who do not benefit from political connections, have been charged under these sections with much less evidence."
