Four officers with the Canada Border Services Agency had to be decontaminated in Niagara hospital after being exposed to an illicit substance.
The CBSA says the officers were searching a vehicle at the Peace Bridge. When they opened a couple of bags in the vehicle, there was a substance inside that may have been fentanyl.
A spokesperson says the officers began to feel ill and were taken to hospital for exposure to the drug.
They took decontamination showers and released from hospital.
Niagara Falls fire chief Jim Boutilier says it has not yet been confirmed that the substance was fentanyl. You can be exposed to the drug through ingestion, breathing it in, or skin contact.
This happened the same day that the OPP announced it is equipping its officers with two doses of naloxone nasal spray. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist that can reverse an opioid overdose for up to an hour, depending on the strength of the opioid.
