Halton Regional Police have arrested a man they allege had a blood alcohol concentration nearly three times the legal limit while on his way to his job as a truck driver.
Sgt. Paul Rudall tells NEWSTALK 1010 officers were on patrol near Steeles Ave and Ninth Line in Halton Hills at about 11 p.m. Thursday when they spotted a driver going about 115 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.
Rudall says the driver as pulled over and arrested after failing a roadside alcohol test. Once the man was in custody, police administered a pair of breathalyzer tests that produced readings of 237 and 220 mg of alcohol/100 mL of blood.
Investigators learned the man they had stopped had been commuting to his job as a truck driver.
"He's what we call a high-functioning alcoholic and had probably good tolerance for alcohol. It's quite alarming how frequently we experience that sort of thing, so it was very good to be able to arrest this driver and charge him for the offence."
Rudall concedes it is possible the man had been drunk on the job alongside you on the road in the past. He would not divulge who the man drives for. Rudall says it not always simple to weed out drunk drivers.
"Until we get roadside with these drivers or unless we get information from people who actually see it, either on the road or from Crime Stoppers sources, then we can't really do anything about it,"
Rudall encourages you to call 911 if you see someone you suspect might be driving drunk.
