A city spokesperson tells NEWSTALK 1010 Toronto plans to entirely close High Park to the public to prevent crowds from forming as the park’s famous cherry blossoms peak.
Motor vehicles have been barred from the city parks for several weeks, but the mayor previously called the prospect of blocking all access to the sprawling High Park to manage the spread of COVID-19 "impractical".
"The reason it's taken some time to put the plan together…is because it is complex and it will involve the utilization of a fair number of people to keep people safe," John Tory said Tuesday.
Tory said the plan could be detailed as early as Wednesday. He re-affirmed a commitment that the plan will provide Torontonians a way to stream a view of the blossoms in real time.
Toronto's cherry blossoms typically bloom in late April or early May and draw thousands of visitors from all over the GTA and busloads of international tourists.
"The objective is not to be spoilsports, or killjoys, or people who are trying to ruin those enjoying one of the rites of spring in Toronto, but this spring is different in lot of respects," Tory said.
