A serial pedophile who was considered a high-risk to re-offend after being placed in Brampton last week has been arrested.
Correctional Services of Canada issued a warrant for 36-year-old Madilyn Harks, formerly known as Matthew Harks, and Peel Police made the arrest Friday.
Harks had three convictions of sexual assault against girls under the age of eight and claimed - as Matthew Harks - to have victimized 60 girls earlier this decade in British Columbia.
Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said this never should've happened in the first place.
"Corrections Canada dropped the ball," Brown said. "Put them in an area of our city next to the public park with the playground, next to the Brampton library, next to our local museum that runs children's programming."
"That's like putting an alcoholic next to a liquor store."
Peel Police Cst. Ahkil Mooken said it wasn't clear which conditions were broken since the order came from the federal government.
"No criminal charges have been laid, however we do have an investigation," he said.
Conditions included not attending public swimming areas, day-cares, school grounds, playgrounds or community centres, or from being in the presence of any children under the age of 14 unless accompanied by a responsible adult who has been approved by her parole supervisor.
"What was Corrections Canada thinking in the first place?"
Brown added that the police were keeping him up to date with Harks' movement.
"The chief has been very hands on and has kept me informed on progress," he said. "As much as the public safety minister didn't seem to be worried, 10 times out of 10 I will trust the advice of our chief of police."
