Golden State Warriors star Kevin Durant may not play all next season after injuring his achilies tendon in a win over the Toronto Raptors in game five of the NBA Finals on Monday.
It was that play that raised the ire of the Warriors and their fans, when several Raptors fans were seen cheering as Durant hobbled off the court.
One Toronto fan has since set up an online fundraiser for the Kevin Durant Charity Foundation, which helps at-risk youth.
``We're sorry that some fans of Raptor Nation at the Scotiabank arena, Jurassic Park, and in some bars/restaurants showing the game, displayed an ugly side of fandom when they cheered on the injury of Kevin Durant,'' says the fundraiser on GoFundMe.
By Thursday afternoon (at 3pm) donations had topped the original goal of $25,000, and sat at just under $30,000. The organizer, Hamzah Moin set a new goal of $40,000.
He says donations have been pouring in from all corners of the country, and even some Warriors fans have managed to get involved, donating to the fund.
Moin says he hasn't been in touch with Kevin Durant himself, but the head of the Foundation has reached out, since they were seeing a jump in donations directly to their website as well.
The Foundation helps build and restore basketball courts in high-crime and low income neighbourhoods, in cities across the US.
Moin says there's no time cut off, but he hopes to reach the new goal, in time for tip off in game six.
As for if he wants Durant to reach out, Moin is indifferent.
"I think, it will be nice but for the most part, I think the greater story is just everyone coming together in Raptors nation."
