An Innifil woman just weeks away from her wedding is dead after a crash in which both drag racing and drunk driving are suspected.
Police in Troy, Michigan, about 30 minutes north of Detroit say 27-year-old Cassandra Hunter was killed early Sunday after a crash on the I-75.
According to local TV station WDIV, the souped-up 1984 Mazda that Hunter was riding in slowed to about 10 mph on the interstate which has a speed limit of 70 mph. Another car alongside the Mazda did the same and police believe the two cars were about to race.
That's when a Ford F-150 slammed into the back of the at full speed, crushing the rear of the small car and pushing it into the guardrail where it burst into flames.
A source tells NEWSTALK 1010 Hunter's fiancé was at the wheel of the Mazda R7A. Police say a 29-year-old Innisfil man suffered serious injuries in the crash. Detroit's WWJ says while both were wearing seatbelts their car did not have airbags.
The man steering the pickup truck is suspected of driving drunk. WDIV reports it will take a few weeks for results of a blood alcohol test to come back. No charges have been laid.
Hunter and her fiancé were in Michigan to take in the Woodward Dream Cruise, a classic car event. A NEWSTALK 1010 source who has crossed paths with the pair at similar events describes them as "good people, a nice couple."
