Teachers unions are not very pleased with what they heard in Thursday's provincial budget but does that mean parents should be worried about a strike?
It sounds like a possibility.
Sam Hammond, president of the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario joined NEWSTALK 1010's Moore in the Morning.
Teacher contracts expire this summer. Hammond says the union will negotiate in good faith but, "The rhetoric coming out of this government and the lack of funding in this budget...is making it extremely problematic and difficult."
The budget includes an increase to education funding but the unions claim it's not enough.
"The rate of inflation is 1.9 percent. They haven't even come close to meeting that," Hammond says.
NDP Leader Andrea Horwath has some concerns as well.
Asked whether there may be conversations about a strike, Horwath told Moore in the Morning, "We're going to have to wait and see."
However, she expects the government's education funding plan will impact teacher negotiations.
