The Toronto District School Board says some elementary students, still waiting for a teacher for their virtual class, may not get one until mid-to-late next week.
"This is not the timeline that any of us wanted or anticipated," the board said in an update on its website. "We recognize that families are understandably upset. We most sincerely appreciate your continued patience as we work to meet our shared goal of having virtual classes underway for all TDSB students."
Online school began on Tuesday, but the night before, the board said it was still 500 teachers short, blaming growing demand for virtual learning.
In the update on Thursday, it said about 400 teachers had been hired with fewer than 100 to go. However, once teachers are hired they need two days of training on Brightspace, the board's virtual learning platform.
Families are being told to keep logging in to check if their class has started.
"It is not possible to email parents/guardians of individual classes as they come online so please continue to check Brightspace on a regular basis," the TDSB said.
