Jennifer Keesmaat's first campaign promise as a Toronto mayoral candidate is a whopper.
The former city planner is vowing to build 100,000 affordable housing units within 10 years if she unseats John Tory in October.
To get there, Keesmaat says she will unlock city-owned lands for development, partner with industry and the federal government to build housing and keep it affordable permanently. While her announcement Tuesday was short on financial specifics, Keesmaat promises more details will come in the weeks ahead.
Mayor Tory in turn defended his record on affordable housing, pointing to 4,000 units approved for construction by the current city council.
