A nurse who preyed on elderly patients in her care says she wouldn't have been able to murder eight people if more controls were in place on medication at long-term care homes.
The revelations come in a lengthy interview Elizabeth Wettlaufer gave to lawyers from an inquiry examining how she was able to kill eight patients and attempt to kill four others.
A transcript of the lawyers' interview with Wettlaufer was submitted in evidence as the inquiry got underway this week.
Wettlaufer says she's given a lot of thought to changes that could be made in order to stop people from repeating her crimes.
She says insulin -- which she used to kill her patients over the span of nearly a decade -- should be controlled and accounted for.
Wettlaufer also says medication rooms shouldn't be behind closed doors, and insulin pens should have controls so doses cannot be easily changed.
