The man who was drunk when he shattered a family outside of Kitchener in November, has been sentenced to seven and a half years in jail.
Ahmed Darwish, 26, was driving at more than 200 km/h when his car slammed into the one carrying Susana Dumitru, her infant son and her husband.
The 29-year-old mother was killed, and baby George left with life altering head injuries. The dad required 20 stitches to close a cut on his head.
The crash happened on highway 7/8 west of Kitchener.
Inside the Mercedes driven by Darwish, officers found two open bottles of alcohol, as well as a baggie containing illegal drugs.
After being taken back to the police station, Darwish refused to give a breath sample 17 times and also turned down five request for drug sobriety tests.
Prior to Justice John Lynch handing down his sentence on Monday, Razvan Dumitru spoke to the court – emphasizing what the loss of his wife meant to him.
“We were a family of three for 65 days,” he said.
“I can’t smile anymore. I’m crying each day and night.”
On the day of the crash, Dumitru said, he had asked his wife when they would have a second child.
“Little did I know that would be the last day of happiness,” he said.
The Crown was asking for 10 years in jail, along with a 12 year driving ban, while the defence had requested six years in prison.
Darwish had previously been convicted of impaired driving in 2009, but didn't serve any jail time.
He'll receive credit for the six months he's already served, which means there's still seven years left on his sentence.
