Police say a man is dead after gunshots were fired in the Lawrence and Kingston Rd. area of Scarborough, in what marks Toronto's 90th homicide of the year.
It happened at about 1:30 Sunday afternoon.
Police tell NEWSTALK1010 they were called to 4175 Lawrence Ave. East for sounds of gunshots.
When they arrived, they found shell casings and related paraphernalia inside a nearby building.
The male victim was also located with gunshot wounds.
"[Paramedics] immediately put a rush on [an] ambulance and started trying to save the man's life," Const. David Hopkinson told NEWSTALK1010. "Ambulance showed up and still did the same thing, but the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene."
"We know that the man was suffering from gunshot wounds, so our Homicide Squad has been called in to continue this investigation," he added.
There's no word on the man's age nor on any suspects.
Const. Hopkinson could not confirm if a man being led away from the apartment building by police was linked to the case.
The city's 90 homicides to date in 2018 has surpassed 1991's record of 89 homicides in a calendar year.
However, Const. Hopkinson says the man may not be the 90th homicide victim of the year, because sometimes police can be notified about a death resulting from a previous violent incident several days after it occurs. In that case, that death would be counted first.
