The Toronto criminal lawyer who was shot outside of his office late last year, has finally spoken to reporters.
And Randall Barrs says Halton Police officers dropped the ball and failed to arrest a man he called 'very dangerous'.
It was back on September 20th, when Barrs was standing in the driveway of his law office on Bedford Road in Yorkville. He was shot twice in the legs by a man wearing a construction vest and a blonde wig.
Moments later, Halton Police officers who had been following the man, jumped in and shot him.
51-year-old Grayson Delong recovered and faces 15 charges.
While the province's Special Investigations Unit cleared the officers with Halton of any wrongdoing, Barrs says there were a number of chances for them to take Delong into custody.
But they didn't.
Delong was being monitored by the officers since 9 o'clock that morning, after he left an appearance at the Brampton courthouse.
The SIU has revealed that Delong went from there to Sherway Gardens, and received a paper bag from someone in another vehicle.
From there, he drove to an area, blocks from Barrs office. He was still wearing his construction disguise and a blond wig, when he got out and wandered around a parkette.
It's since been revealed that officers were concerned that he was going to commit a robbery, so they called Toronto Police for backup.
Delong moved from there, to the office of Barrs, and fired his gun, hitting the lawyer.
But Barrs says there were plenty of oppomrtunities to arrest Delong.
"Given the guy’s background, given that he’s disguised with intent, given the history we have in this city of this type of disguise being used… The paper bag, walking in the park, driving as fast as he can from Admiral to the front of the building… What are they waiting for? They’re waiting for something to happen. They’re totally protected. When something is going to happen, they’re not in any danger. Delong as far as I’m concerned should’ve been arrested at the park while he was wandering amongst those kids.”
Barrs also believes someone else was in on it. He says someone was watching his office and called Delong to tell him that Barrs was there.
The SIU cleared the officers of any wrongdoing, something that Barrs agrees with but says they should have intervened earlier.
Halton Police stand by their actions of the day.
