A Liberal MPP wants to make your Christmas shopping experience more transparent and easier, without the need for a calculator.
Yvan Baker is introducing a private member's bill called the "What You See Is What You Pay" Act.
The proposed legislation would require businesses to display the final, all-inclusive price for all products and services. The displayed price would have to include taxes, shipping, services, or any other extra charges.
"I think it's a great idea for the consumer, lots of pain for the retailer," says marketing expert Tony Chapman.
He says it would be more difficult for businesses to sell their products, with pricing being the most important tie-breaker in retail.
"But retailers can also talk about personalized service, warranty, customer care, their overall experience, the reason to buy in their store," as ways to attract consumers.
Chapman says the power has already shifted to the consumer, who has a "mobile wand" that allows them to compare prices and extras.
"When [artificial intelligence] and bots really come on the market the next year, all of that will be compressed into a nanosecond," Chapman says. "So all that information is going to be there anyway."
Whether the bill passes or not, he says businesses might have to take the initiative for all-in pricing themselves.
"If a retailer competes, they're going to have to compete with a higher degree of transparency, or consumers will take their purchases elsewhere."
