The mayor of Toronto says a pilot project that will radically change how you move along King St is not something the city is looking at replicating elsewhere.
The year-long pilot set to launch next month is meant to speed up travel of the 504 King streetcar. It is the TTC's busiest surface route, moving 65,000 people a day. About 20,000 cars travel the same span daily.
The experiment between Bathurst St and Jarvis St will only allow drivers to travel King a block at a time, after which they'll be forced to turn right. Left turns will be entirely prohibited.
To gauge the program's success, the TTC will monitor streetcar travel times, ridership and reliability. The effects on parking, traffic flow on other downtown routes, crashes, retail sales and emissions will also be measured.
The Toronto Sun reports that TTC CEO Andy Byford said Monday that if it succeeds, the program could be considered on "other routes potentially."
That's news to John Tory.
