A special weather statement has been issued by Environment Canada, calling for up to 40 mm of rain by Sunday night.
According to meteorologist Mark Schuster, the system, moving in from southwestern Ontario, is expected to arrive in the GTA sometime Sunday morning.
"Sometime between 9 and 11 o'clock this morning. Looks like we're going to have periods of rain throughout the late morning and through the afternoon. It looks like the heaviest rain is going to come sometime between 6 and 9 p.m. this evening."
The weather statement covers areas east to Cobourg and west into the Niagara region.
Despite the amount of rainfall expected, the good news according to Schuster, very little chance of pooling because of milder temperatures.
"The ground is no longer frozen across the Toronto area. A rainfall like this a few weeks ago could have been quite problamatic with flooding and ponding in low lying areas."
The system is expected to clear out by Monday afternoon.
