Calvin Nimoh has been found guilty of first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of cancer researcher Mark Ernsting in late 2015.
The verdict was handed down inside a Toronto courtroom, Friday evening, just one day after deliberations began.
Ernsting, 39, was killed on December 15, 2015. He was walking in the Yonge and Gerard area when he was stabbed nine times by Nimoh, 24.
“He (Nimoh) came into court and told more lies about the event and about my husband," Ernsting's husband Robert Iseman told reporters outside the courtroom Friday evening. "Thankfully the jury was able to see through his lies and properly convict him.”
Ernsting was a biomedical engineer at the Ontario Institute of Cancer Research.
Last Month, Nimoh attempted to plead guilty to manslaughter, saying he did not have the presence of mind for murder; however, prosecutors rejected the plea, with the Crown later contending that there was a clear plan to both rob and stab the victim that particular night.
Homicide detective Paul Worden told CP24 that the hearing was a “long process” for the family of the victim.
