A man is fighting for his life after being shot during a carjacking in Vaughan.
Police say the 26-year-old from Toronto and a 23-year-old woman rolled into a plaza near Steeles Ave W and Hilda Ave just after 11 p.m. Monday.
York Regional Police const. Andy Pattenden tells NEWSTALK 1010 the pair got out of the car and were walking toward a restaurant that turned out to be closed.
"The suspects approached them. There was some sort of an altercation, we believe the suspects asked for the keys to the (victim's) vehicle. There was a struggle that ensued and in that struggle, the male victim...was shot."
The man suffered life-threatening injuries and remains in hospital in critical condition. Pattenden says the woman was assaulted too and wound up with minor injuries.
The two suspects in the attack took off in the victim's 2008 black four-door Ford Focus, licence plate BNNM866.
Police are not sure if the suspects and victims know each other. Investigators have only been able to describe the suspects as two black men wearing dark clothing, including hoods. They are hoping surveillance video from the plaza or from others nearby can help them build more detailed descriptions.
While Pattenden does not mean to suggest the victims in this case did anything wrong, if confronted with a carjacker police recommend you do what they ask.
"Just to hopefully avoid some sort of a physical injury. And remember that property or the value of property just isn't worth your life."
