A fire at an apartment building in Regent Park early this morning has claimed the life of a man.
The victim, reported to be middle aged, succumb to injuries in hospital, after being pulled from his unit at River street and Gerrard street.
A passerby first spotted the smoke coming from the unit just before 9 a.m. and called 9-1-1.
Speaking to media outside the building, Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg confirmed the victim did not survive the fire.
"Unfortunately during search and rescue operations, they did locate one male occupant inside the suite. Unfortunately I can confirm we've received notice from St. Mike's hospital that he has died as a result of his injuries."
Pegg adds the fire was quickly knocked down by his firefighters and that the damage was contained to the single unit where it broke out.
As for a cause of the fire "we don't have any indication as to origin cause or circumstances yet. Our fire investigations team is here now. They're working of course as always in collaboration with Toronto Police."
The Ontario office of the Fire Marshal has also been contacted.
