A massive fire that broke out in Brandon, Manitoba Saturday afternoon has left several buildings destroyed or seriously damaged, and displaced more than 100 people from their homes.
Officials with the city say the blaze appears to have started in an office and school supplies store, and then spread to Massey Manor which has 58 apartments. The flames also spread to a bar and a beer store.
No injuries were reported.
Krisha Prince had gone for a walk with her children when she got a call saying her apartment building was on fire.
Prince's building was next to the office supply store that investigators suspect was where the fire started.
With tears filling her eyes, Prince says she and the other families that live in the gutted building have lost practically everything.
Another resident, Leanne Marlow, says she was frantically searching for her cat, Buddy, when police pounded on her door, telling her to get out now.
Marlow quickly ended up standing on the street and watched as the roof to her building collapsed, breaking down into tears over the likely loss of Buddy.
Many of the suites are operated by community groups and the Canadian Red Cross says it is accepting registrations from people displaced from their homes by the flames.
Reinforcements from outside the city, including firefighters from Canadian Forces Base Shilo, came to help stop the blaze.
The cause of the fire remains unknown.
