Memorials were held in Toronto to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge including at Fort York National Historic Site where Premier Kathleen Wynne and Mayor John Tory were among the hundreds of people.
A commemorative parade run, demonstratoins and a vintage aircraft flyover all took place.
In John Tory's speech he said, “Whether we are here today at Fort York, or standing on Vimy Ridge in the shadow of that awesome, silent stone monument dedicated to Canada, I ask that we remember that sacrifice. Let it reignite our own dedication to our country and our ideals of peace, order and good government and commit to guarding that national character over the next hundred years.”
Premier Wynne thanked veterans and servicemen for attending.
Another memorial was held at the Old City Hall Cenotaph Sunday morning where wreaths were laid by French citizens wishing to express their gratitude to Canadian soldiers.
Cemeronies were also held in Ottawa at the National War Memorial.
