In an effort to curb the spread of rabies, workers from the Ontario ministry of natural resources have begun to drop vaccine baits for the disease in green spaces aross the western part of Toronto.
The initiative kicked off yesterday, the ministry confirmed, and will run through the end of October.
When wild animals chew or swallow the vaccine, a loonie-sized green package, they become immunized to the viral disease two weeks after ingestion.
To avoid unintended consumption, a "do not eat label" and toll free number are indicated on each of the packets.
The ministry says that if your dog or cat does ingest a vaccine, the most pet owners can expect is an upset stomach. The packaging is plastic, so your dog might regurgitate it after ingesting it. If more than one vaccine is ingested, people are urged to take their animal to a veterinarian.
Rabies is spread through saliva, and was reported in 171 confirmed cases among raccoons and 84 cases among skunks in 2016.
