Mississauga city council has voted to opt out of privately-operated cannabis retail stores.
The decision comes a day before Toronto's city council is scheduled to debate the issue.
"Recent changes to the retail cannabis model have occurred too quickly and there are too many unanswered questions at this time," Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie said.
The province has given until January 22nd for municipalities to opt out.
"The province has not given municipalities any control over where cannabis stores can be located in our City. This is cause for great concern," she said.
Crombie is leaving the door open to potentially rejoining, although that does mean missing out on earmarked provincial funding.
"It's important we take the time to get this right," she said.
Toronto Mayor John Tory, as well as the city's manager, are recommending an opt in.
"I believe that rather than leaving the retail supply of marijuana in the hands of people who are doing it illegally, that we're better off to have a regulated approach," he said Wednesday.
