A 31-year-old woman has been charged in the death of her 11-day-old daughter.
Edmonton Police got a call on March 29 of a baby not breathing at a residence near 72 Street and 83 Avenue.
The medical examiner's office contacted police on April 6 after autopsy and toxicology tests confirmed the baby died from a lethal dose of methamphetamine.
Michelle Rice has been charged with second-degree murder. Police have not identified the girl, but NEWSTALK 1010's sister station CTV reports her name was Mikayla.
Edmonton Police say the level of meth in Mikayla's system was too high to have been passed on through breast milk alone.
"The Medical Examiner has stated there are two ways that the baby could have ingested the meth...and that’s either anally or orally,” police spokesperson Scott Pattison told reporters Thursday.
Homicide detectives would like to speak with several other people who visited the residence in the 11 days prior to the baby's death.
Investigators are asking anyone that was at the house on or after March 18 to contact police.
