The City of Montreal is planning to formally ask the federal government to impose a nationwide ban on handguns and so-called assault weapons for anyone who doesn't work in law enforcement.
Coun. Alex Norris is expected to table a motion at a council meeting next Monday asking Ottawa to strengthen its gun-control bill, known as C-71.
Montreal also wants Ottawa to increase the restrictions for anyone buying legal hunting rifles and shotguns to ensure they don't get into the hands of people who are at risk to commit violent acts.
Norris says assault weapons are military-style guns that are designed to kill people and that can shoot a high number of bullets in a short period of time.
The city's motion on guns comes shortly after Toronto's city council asked the federal government to ban sales of similar weapons in Canada.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in northwestern Quebec today that recent shootings in Toronto and New Brunswick have caused Canadians to reflect on what more can be done to keep communities safe.
He says his government is listening attentively to the concerns of Canadians on the availability of firearms in cities across the country.
