The two-alarm fire broke out in the Victorian style home on Stafford Street near King Street around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday.
It was knocked down by fire crews about an hour later.
No injuries were reported, but there is significant damage to the first and second floors of the home.
Acting Platoon Chief Mike Swift told reporters the fire was hidden in the walls and floor so quite a bit of cutting had to be down to put it out.
About 60 firefighters were called to the scene.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
