It was almost a 10 month job, but a major downtown off-ramp is now open.
The new York/Bay/Yonge ramp from the eastbound Gardiner Expressway to Lower Simcoe Street and Harbour Street opened just after 4:00 p.m. Sunday.
Mayor John Tory was at the ramp ahead of the opening. He told the media "This ramp was completed on time, despite encountering severe problems with a storm sewer on Harbour Street and an early winter."
"Investing in Toronto's infrastructure is the only way to ease congestion and to keep traffic moving. The demolition of the old ramp has transformed the area and has improved access to the waterfront." he added.
The $30 million dollar project includes the new, shorter ramp that provides access to the waterfront and features winter technology with nozzles that release anti-freeze spray in slippery conditions.
Included in the project Harbour Street was widened from three to four lanes between Lower Simcoe and Bay Streets.
The ramp was scheduled to open at 6 p.m., but traffic started using the new ramp just after 4:00 p.m.
