We may find out later today whether York and Halton regions will follow Toronto, Peel and Ottawa into new restrictions.
York Region's medical officer of health, Dr. Karim Kurji, told regional council on Thursday that there's a "very high probability" and that restrictions could be announced Friday and take effect Sunday at midnight.
The news has not yet been confirmed by the province.
A week ago, the provincial government moved Toronto, Peel and Ottawa into a modified version of Stage 2 restrictions, including a ban on indoor dining and the closure of gyms and theatres.
Provincial officials have been watching York and Halton regions closely as case counts rise along with hospitalizations.
Dr. Dirk Huyer, head of Ontario's outbreak response, said Thursday that like Toronto and Peel, those regions are seeing outbreaks from parties, social gatherings, sports and gyms.
