Police in York Region have arrested a 22-year-old man from Newmarket in a case that had a community on edge.
A 14-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted, then pistol-whipped while walking on a trail near Bayview and Wellington, on Monday of last week.
Police put out several pleas for surveilance video, and thousands of tips came pouring in.
As a matter of fact, Constable Laura Nicolle with York Regional Police says it was because of those tips that they were able to make an arrest.
Charges and the man's name won't be announced until he makes a court appearance.
In addition to the video of the alleged suspect, police also put out a composite image of the man who was believed to be the attacker.
Police though, are still looking for more information.
"This investigation is ongoing and investigators are still looking to speak with anyone with information including the potential witness who was jogging on the trails and the young woman with blond hair who was approached by the suspect after getting off of York Transit bus #1088 on the date of the incident."
