The Special Investigations Unit says no charges are warranted after a psychiatric patient at a downtown Toronto hospital suffered a broken hip when Tasered repeatedly by police officers.
The police watchdog agency says the hospital first called police on Sept. 24, 2016, and the patient was subdued by a conducted energy weapon and then sedated by hospital staff.
The SIU says police were again called to the hospital on Sept. 27 regarding the same patient and three officers Tasered the man multiple times before he was subsequently restrained by hospital staff.
The SIU says the man suffered a broken hip when he fell to the floor.
SIU director Tony Loparco says the actions by the officers did not amount to an excessive use of force, noting that the patient was a large and muscular man, who was aggressive and violent towards the staff.
The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
