GTA residents concerned about what a provincial takeover of the Toronto Transit Commission could mean for jobs had their fears allayed by the Premier himself, Sunday afternoon.
Callers into NEWSTALK1010's Best Show Ever with Mark Towhey expressed worry about the TTC cutting jobs once the province takes control of the transit agency, but Doug Ford says there is nothing to worry about.
"By no means do we want to hurt the TTC," the Premier told Towhey. "They're actually going to benefit from it."
"We are going to be able to build subways a lot quicker and at a lower cost," he added. "No one is losing their jobs from the TTC. Actually, if anything, we're going to need more people because we're going to be expanding the transit system."
The Premier said while it's not a knock against the TTC, the transit agency is not very good at building things.
But, "we're going to work with them everywhere, every way we can to make sure no front line person loses their jobs, especially the drivers."
Ford says the province is currently in negotiations with the city as to whether his government will be taking over the trains and light rail vehicles as well.
