Following today's Ontario Court of Appeal decision for Bill 5, the Better Local Government Act, officials with the city of Toronto have announced that the nomination period is re-opening for those who wish to run for council or school board trustee.
However, candidates only have two days to do so, and they must sign up in person at either the Election Services offices on the first floor of Toronto City Hall, or at 89 Northline Road - near Victoria Park and O'Connor.
Candidates can visit either office between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. both Thursday September 20 and Friday September 21. They must bring their nomination paper along with them, as well as proof of address within Toronto or the school board jurisdiction as well as the filing fee. Those running for Councillor must also provide City Hall with a completed endorsement of nomination form.
For those candidates who already signed up to run under the 47-Ward model, they will need to submit a Change of Ward Notification form available on the City of Toronto's website as well as at Election Services offices. Forms must be submitted in person or by an agent, and candidates will not be charged an additional fee.
If you've signed up to run and do not notify the City Clerk of your intentions before 4:30 p.m. on Friday, your name will be withdrawn from the ballot.
Nominations will not re-open for those running for mayor, as the Act does not have an impact on these candidates.
The municipal election will still run on October 22.
