The discovery of a noose at a construction site in Toronto's downtown core is being treated as a hate crime.
Our media partner CP24 is reporting that The Daniels Corporation confirmed the discovery at one of their sites at Dundas Street East and Sumach Street Friday night.
The company says it's taking "immediate action" and has filed a report with Toronto Police.
In a statement tonight, the company says, "We are disgusted and horrified at this heinous act, which we are treating as a hate crime. This deplorable act against the Black community is unacceptable and we reaffirm that there is zero tolerance for racism, prejudice and hate on our construction sites and within our organization."
"Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident within the construction industry and reinforces that more action is required."
It's the second noose found at a downtown construction site in as many days.
In a joint statement, construction companies EllisDon and Govan Brown confirmed a noose was discovered at a separate site at 81 Bay Street Thursday.
"Toronto Police Services were contacted immediately and they have since been to the site," indicates the statement.
Toronto Police Superintendent Michael Barsky says it was found on the 27th floor of 81 Bay Street.
Apparently, there is no video surveillance on that site. A detective has been assigned to investigate.
"There is no evidence to suggest this is connected to the nooses that were located at another construction site near Coxwell and Sammon area on June 10th," says Barsky.
Two nooses were discovered on a construction site at Michael Garron Hospital in East York, near Coxwell and Mortimer Avenues.
That case is also being treated as a hate crime.
