We're only into March and the distracted driving numbers in this province are staggering and shameful.
Eleven people have killed in distracted driving-related crashes, almost triple the number for the same period, last year.
Are people just not getting the message?
The OPP actually thinks they are but they're not acting on the message, thinking their attention on the road isn't impacted.
"We laid over 2,400 charges related to distracted driving during our March Break blitz. During last year's campaign we laid 1,600 charges," says OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt. "We had people brushing their teeth, getting dressed, doing their hair, having breakfast, looking at their school work or office papers, and reading."
He says passengers can play a big role in getting the number of distracted driving cases down. "We really need passengers and other people who have influence on drivers to speak up and tell them that kind of behaviour is unacceptable and they'll refuse to drive with someone who is distracted."
