Canadian Olympic gold medallist and former world champion kayaker Adam van Koeverden has won the federal Liberal nomination for Milton.
Van Koeverden, who turns 37 later this month, initially announced he was dipping his foot into politics on CTV’s Your Morning back in October.
"Thank you Milton, you guys showed up, it was freezing cold" he told the crowd following his nomination Sunday afternoon. "This is a victory for Milton, this is a victory for progress, this was a collaboration, this was a community event, and everybody here won."
He was up against two other local Liberal party members, including Azim Rizvee who ran for the nomination - and lost - in 2015.
However, Rizvee announced in recent days that he would be dropping out, alleging that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had informed him van Koeverden was the preferred candidate.
Van Koeverden has a challenge on his hands - Milton's incumbent MP is Conservative deputy leader Lisa Raitt. She's been elected to Parliament three times.
The 2019 Federal Election will be held on October 21.
