It was 19 years ago today (January 14) Toronto was taken over by the army.
We weren't under seige, then Mayor Mel Lastman called them in to deal with one of the worst winter snow storms in the city's history.
The city was ground to a halt by snow banks so high some reached the second storey of houses and completely covered bus shelters. In the end 118 centimetres fell in the city.
Over 400 soldiers with more than 120 military vehicles came from CFB Petawawa to the old Downsview base, and another 110 reservists were on standby for shovel duty.
While the decision may have saved lives by opening up streets and getting those who couldn't around the city, it did make Toronto a punchline for the rest of the country.
However, when asked about the call by the Toronto Star in 2009 Lastman said "Would I do it again? You’re darn right I would!"
