A serious two-car collision in Durham Region Monday night claimed the life of one person.
A mini van and sedan collided in the intersection of Cochrane Street and Dundas Street West just after 9:30 p.m.
Some witnesses told CTV News Toronto, the sedan was travelling at a high rate of speed and caught fire after the collision, landing on a residential front yard.
Speaking to out media partner CP24, Durham Regional Police Const. George Tudos confirmed the victim, a male, died at the scene.
"Unfortunately the male that was inside that vehicle, I know that they were performing CPR, despite their best efforts, that male did succumb to his injuries."
One of two occupants of the mini van was taken to hospital with unspecified injuries.
As for whether speed was indeed a factor in the collision, Tudos added the reconstruction unit would be on scene to try and piece things together.
" There's a lot of debris scattered throughout. They're going to have to go through everything, to determine exactly what happened. Which directions the vehicles were travelling and from there draw on what exactly happened here."
The intersection was expected to be closed for several hours for the investigation and clean up.
