Ontario Power Generation workers represented by the Power Workers' Union (PWU) are in a legal strike position, after the union's membership did not ratify a final offer from their employer.
Contract negotiations between the two had been ongoing since March 31 of this year, when PWU's collective agreement expired.
Both the province's Minister of Energy, Greg Rickford, and Minister of Labour Laurie Scott, are urging both sides to come to a deal as soon as possible.
"We strongly urge both parties to reach a resolution, before this leads to any power interruptions," states a joint release from both ministries. "We want to assure the people of Ontario that we are reviewing all options available to us to ensure that the supply of electricity remains uninterrupted in this province."
"Our government will have no hesitation to act swiftly and decisively if required."
According to the release, OPG produces approximately 50 per cent of the province's electricity. The government says a strike could lead to prolonged power outages, ultimately putting families at risk during the holiday season and having a ripple effect on the province's economy.
