2018 was a bloody year in Toronto, a record for the number of murders.
That part has been well documented. What is new, is new numbers showing the rest of the province appears to be following suit.
The OPP released new numbers on Monday, showing they had 42 murders in provincial police patrolled areas in 2018. That's the highest number they've seen since 2010.
But they did set a new record with the number of times a gun was used in those murders with 18.
That's more than the previous two years, combined.
"We're seeing an increase in the number of murders involving guns, which is consistent with the trends reported in other major jurisdictions." says OPP Staff Sgt Carolle Dionne.
But she says what is different is the type of gun being used.
In 15 of those cases, the shooter used a long gun, like a rifle. That leaves only three cases where a handgun was used.
And unlike in Toronto, where many of the murders have been linked to gang activity, in 93% of OPP murders, the victim knew the shooter.
