It was a wild and ultimately deadly ride through the streets and highways of Durham Region Friday night.
According to OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, it started when a 28-year-old Oshawa man drove onto the 401 Westbound lanes at Simcoe Street and proceeded to collide with multiple vehicles, before exiting at Thickson Road in Whitby.
"As the vehicle entered onto 401 Westbound, it was involved in several fail-to-remain collisions between Simcoe Street and Thickson road."
Schmidt confirmed the vehicle was invloved in a total of four collisions.
" I can tell you that there was only minor injuries reported to the involved drivers in those situations."
The same driver was then involved in a head-on collision with a Durham Transit bus and died at the scene.
The collision occurred westbound on Victoria Street, west of Thickson Road south, at around 7 p.m.
The driver of the bus suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
There were no passengers on the bus at the time of the crash.
Durham Region Trasit released a statement following the crash.
"We have launched an internal investigation into the matter, per standard operating procedure. Given the nature of this ongoing police investigation, DRT is not in a position to comment on the specifics of the tragic incident."
The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
