An Oshawa woman has been charged with assault and making threats, with hate crimes charges still a possibility, after allegedly targeting Muslims.
Police say a 47-year-old woman went up to a Muslim couple at the Oshawa Centre and threatened the woman about the hijab she was wearing. The woman allegedly assaulted the couple.
When two bystanders approached her to confront her about her actions, Const. George Tudos says she kicked both of them. The two bystanders were also Muslim.
The next day, the same woman allegedly approached a Muslim woman at Lakeview Park and pushed her to the ground.
Georgina Cassidy has been charged with five counts of assault, threatening death, and threatening bodily harm.
Police say they are in discussion with the ministry of the Attorney General on whether hate crime charges should be added to the list.
