2016 marked another increase in the number of people killed on OPP patrolled roads.
They say, according to preliminary data, there were 276 fatal collisions last year, killing 309 people. That compares to 301 deaths in 2015.
OPP say distracted or impaired driving, speed, and not wearing a seatbelt were factors in almost two thirds of the deaths.
"We really need everyone to understand that there can be consequences for high risk driving," says OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt. "We're seeing people losing their lives for something as simple as not putting their seatbelt on."
There was also a marked increase in the number of pedestrian deaths, with 38 last year, compared to 25 in 2015.
Schmidt says there needs to be a joint effort to improve safety. "It's a community out on the roads of pedestrians and motorists working together. We all need to try our best and be alert and attentive at whatever we're doing."
