A Toronto park near Bathurst and Highway 401 has been renamed to honour Elijah Marsh, the three-year-old boy who wandered away from home and died on a cold winter morning three years ago.
Councillor Josh Colle was on hand Tuesday evening - along with the boy's mother Georgette and his uncle Michael - to unveil the brand new sign for Rajah Park, now officially known as Elijah Park.
Elijah Marsh walked out of his grandmother's apartment building in the early morning hours of February 19, 2015 and was found frozen to death about six hours later in a nearby backyard.
Security camera video showed Elijah, dressed only in a shirt, diaper and winter boots, pushing his way through the building's front doors at about 4 a.m. when temperatures had fallen to about -20 C.
"We have an amazing community here," Georgette said of the support she has received over the past three years.
"My reaction to the park - I was shocked that everybody had initiated it and that it was already underway and they asked for our blessing," she told CP24. "This is actually the first park that I took him to, so it was an amazing way - and a special way - to honour him, so I was very happy."
Coun. Colle initiated the renaming of the park, something that Michael says he is so thankful for.
"Seeing the support of the community, just knowing that the community is here for us, the family, the unity," he said. "It's just a beautiful day."
