Ontario's Progressive Conservatives are making a pitch to middle class voters with their 2018 election platform.
Leader Patrick Brown laid out the plan, dubbed "People's Guarantee," in a room full of party faithfuls Saturday at a convention in Etobicoke.
He promised to make life more affordable by lowering taxes on the middle class, bringing in a child care tax credit and lowering hydro bills.
If elected, the PCs are promising a 22.5 percent income tax reduction for the middle class, defined as those making between $42,960 and $85,925.
They're also promising a refundable tax credit for child care. It would total up to $6750 per child with the actual amount based on the family's income and the ages of the children. The PC's are also pledging to follow through on the Liberal's promise of 100,000 new licensed child care spaces.
Brown vowed to take the current government's cut to your hydro bill a step further. He says they'll lower the average bill by 12 percent, over and above the Liberal's 25 percent cut.
If the PC's are elected next June, a $15 minimum wage will be phased in more slowly. Rather than jumping to $15 in 2019, the PCs will phase in the increase over four years.
They're also offering small businesses another tax break, pledging to decrease the tax rate by another full point to 2.5 percent.
It appears Brown is trying to target the vote-rich GTA. He's promising $5 billion to help build new subways.
He's promising to make driving less expensive as well, through measures including a $500 winter tire tax credit and a move to scrap the Drive Clean program for cars, mini vans and SUVs.
The PCs are also making promises on health care. They're pledging to match the federal government's commitment of $1.9 billion for mental health.
Brown identifies five key promises in his platform (the middle-class income tax cut, the childcare refund, hydro bill reductions, mental health funding, and a new "Trust, Integrity, and Accountability Act") and promises that if they are not fulfilled in his first term as Premier, he will not seek a second.
